The Government of Liberia (GoL), through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will convene an inception workshop to officially launch the Strengthening Agricultural Resilience Through Transformational Livelihood Adaptation in Liberia (SARTLA) Project.
The five-year initiative (2026–2030) aims to strengthen climate resilience and promote sustainable livelihoods among vulnerable communities across Liberia.
The inception workshop will bring together representatives from government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, local stakeholders, and technical experts to establish a shared understanding of the project’s objectives, implementation arrangements, expected outcomes, and stakeholder responsibilities.
Developed jointly by the Government of Liberia and UNDP, the SARTLA Project responds to the growing impacts of climate change on rural populations through a systems-based and transformational adaptation approach.
The project is designed to enhance resilience among communities that depend heavily on natural resources by focusing on ecosystem restoration, strengthening agricultural extension services, improving access to finance, and promoting sustainable value chains in the agriculture, fisheries, and ecotourism sectors.
The Environmental Protection Agency will serve as the Executing Entity, while UNDP will act as the Accredited Entity, providing technical guidance and implementation support throughout the duration of the project.
The inception workshop will provide a platform for stakeholders to:
- Review and validate the project’s objectives and expected results;
- Discuss implementation modalities and coordination mechanisms;
- Clarify institutional roles and responsibilities; and
- Agree on priorities and next steps for the project’s initial phase.
Expected Outcomes of the Workshop
- A shared understanding of project goals, outputs, and expected results;
- Clear definition of stakeholder roles and responsibilities;
- Strengthened coordination among implementing partners;
- Agreement on key priorities and immediate next steps; and
- Formal commencement of project activities.
The SARTLA Project aligns with Liberia’s national climate adaptation strategies and broader sustainable development priorities. It is expected to contribute significantly to improving the resilience of rural communities, safeguarding natural resources, and creating sustainable economic opportunities.
As climate-related challenges continue to affect livelihoods, food security, and ecosystems, the launch of the SARTLA Project marks a critical step toward advancing transformational adaptation and building a more resilient and sustainable future for Liberia.
