ECOWAS Constructs Critical Bridge over Cavalla River

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is spearheading the construction of the Cavalla River Bridge, a critical infrastructure project linking Maryland County, Liberia, and Côte d’Ivoire.

This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to enhance regional integration and road connectivity along the Dakar–Abidjan Corridor. Upon completion, the 288-meter, two-lane bridge will provide a direct and modern roadway, replacing the current perilous river crossings.

The bridge will be constructed using reinforced concrete to withstand the environmental conditions of the Cavalla River. Additionally, a One-Stop Joint Border Post will be established to streamline customs, immigration, and inspection procedures.

Land acquisition has been completed in Pedebo, Maryland County, and a Resettlement Action Plan is being implemented to compensate affected residents. The construction site was officially handed over to the contractor on October 3, 2024, with completion expected within 24 months.

The project is anticipated to have a significant impact on the local economy, reducing travel time, transport costs, and boosting cross-border trade.

It will also create local employment opportunities and enhance regional cooperation between Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. The Cavalla River Bridge represents a landmark project that will foster economic growth, unity, and progress in the region.
