IPNEWS: The Government of the People’s Republic of China has donated a consignment of medical supplies to the John F. Kennedy (JFK) Medical Center, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening Liberia’s healthcare system and deepening the longstanding bilateral relationship between the two countries.
The donation ceremony, held on July 7, brought together Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu, Chief Executive Officer of JFK Medical Center Dr. Linda Birch, Assistant Minister of Health and Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. G. Gorbee Logan, members of the 18th Chinese Medical Team, senior officials of the Ministry of Health, and other stakeholders in Liberia’s health sector.
Speaking during the ceremony, Ambassador Yin said the donation is intended to help address the shortage of essential medical supplies at Liberia’s largest referral hospital while improving its capacity to provide quality healthcare services to patients from across the country.
He described the assistance as more than a humanitarian gesture, calling it another milestone in the decades-long medical cooperation between China and Liberia.
According to Ambassador Yin, the donation reflects the growing strategic partnership between the two countries and demonstrates China’s continued commitment to supporting Liberia’s healthcare development through technical assistance, medical cooperation, and capacity building.
“China remains a reliable partner in Liberia’s development journey,” Ambassador Yin said, emphasizing that his government will continue to support initiatives aimed at improving healthcare services and enhancing the well-being of the Liberian people.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the hospital, JFK Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Dr. Linda Birch expressed gratitude to the Chinese Government for its unwavering support to Liberia’s healthcare system.
She described the donation as timely and significant, noting that the additional medical supplies will strengthen patient care, improve service delivery, and help the hospital meet the increasing healthcare demands of the country’s growing population.
Dr. Birch also praised the contribution of the Chinese Medical Team serving at JFK, noting that beyond providing specialized medical services, the team continues to transfer knowledge and skills to Liberian healthcare professionals through mentorship and training.
Also speaking, Dr. G. Gorbee Logan, Assistant Minister of Health and Deputy Chief Medical Officer, thanked the Government of China for what he described as its longstanding partnership with Liberia’s health sector.
He commended China’s sustained investment in Liberia’s healthcare delivery system through medical equipment donations, infrastructure support, specialized medical missions, and capacity-building initiatives.
Dr. Logan expressed confidence that the partnership between Liberia and China will continue to expand, particularly in the areas of specialized medical training, hospital infrastructure development, emergency healthcare response, and improved healthcare service delivery across the country.
Background on JFK Medical Center
The John F. Kennedy (JFK) Medical Center is Liberia’s premier referral and teaching hospital and serves as the country’s largest public healthcare institution. Located in Sinkor, Monrovia, the hospital was established in the early 1970s following a joint initiative between the governments of Liberia and the United States and was named in honor of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
JFK Medical Center provides specialized healthcare services that are unavailable in many county health facilities, including surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency care, intensive care, and other specialized treatments. It also serves as the principal teaching hospital for the A.M. Dogliotti College of Medicine at the University of Liberia, playing a critical role in training the country’s future doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
In recent years, the hospital has undergone gradual rehabilitation and modernization through support from the Government of Liberia and international development partners. Despite these improvements, the institution continues to face challenges, including shortages of medical supplies, modern diagnostic equipment, and specialized personnel, making external support vital to sustaining quality healthcare delivery.
China has been one of the hospital’s most consistent development partners, regularly dispatching medical teams to Liberia, donating medical equipment and essential supplies, and supporting professional exchanges aimed at strengthening the country’s healthcare workforce.
The latest donation forms part of China’s broader cooperation with Liberia in the health sector, which has included hospital support, medical outreach, training opportunities for Liberian health professionals, and investments in public health initiatives.
Health officials from both countries expressed optimism that the enduring partnership will continue to contribute to improved healthcare services and better health outcomes for Liberians nationwide.
