Guinea President Dismisses 173 Soldiers, Including Coup-Era Commander Michel Lamah

IPNEWS: Guinean Président Mamadi Doumbouya has dismissed 173 soldiers from the country’s armed forces for alleged “desertion,” according to a decree read on national television Monday.

Among those dismissed is Commander Michel Lamah, a member of Guinea’s Special Forces Group (GFS), who rose to public prominence following the September 5, 2021 coup that ousted former President Alpha Condé.

Lamah had publicly claimed a central role in the operation to capture Condé at the presidential palace during the military takeover.

Following the coup, Lamah gradually disappeared from public view, prompting speculation about his whereabouts, including unconfirmed reports that he had been arrested or killed.

However, he unexpectedly resurfaced on New Year’s Eve in 2024 alongside President Doumbouya, the president’s wife and Commander Alya Camara, another prominent figure in the 2021 coup who had spent a long period in detention and away from public view.

Lamah remained visible alongside Doumbouya for some time before once again disappearing from the public scene.

His latest dismissal from the armed forces now places the coup – era commander among the 173 soldiers removed from service over alleged desertion
