The inauguration of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant in Tanzania represents a prominent model of Egyptian-Tanzanian cooperation and embodies Egypt’s supportive role in Africa’s development journey through transferring expertise and contributing to the implementation of a strategic project that serves the aspirations of the Tanzanian people and supports sustainable development efforts.
In this context, anthropologist Hassan Ghazaly, founder of the Pan African Initiative on media and journalism “Afromedia, stated that the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant project represents an important model of African cooperation based on partnership and exchange of expertise. He emphasized that relations between countries are measured by the real projects they provide, which contribute to improving people’s lives and supporting development pathways.
Ghazaly added that this project reflects the ability of African expertise to contribute to the implementation of strategic projects that serve the present and create greater opportunities for the future. He pointed out that the strength of the African continent lies in integration among its countries and transforming its capabilities and resources into tangible achievements that benefit citizens.
He explained that cooperation based on common interests and respect for national sovereignty represents the ideal path toward achieving sustainable development. Such major projects provide a true image of the nature of African partnerships and prove that facts on the ground always remain stronger than any inaccurate media narratives.
Through Afromedia Initiative’s monitoring of the African media landscape and its review of what was published by Tanzanian newspapers and media outlets, reports indicated that Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan inaugurated the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant in the Rufiji region, with a production capacity of 2,115 megawatts. The plant represents a qualitative addition to Tanzania’s electricity generation capacity and contributes to strengthening the stability of the national grid while supporting the industrial, commercial, mining, agricultural, and investment sectors.
The reports also highlighted President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s emphasis on the importance of protecting the plant’s infrastructure, water resources, and surrounding environment to ensure sustainable operation and maintain its efficiency in the long term.
Afromedia Initiative also reported on the participation of Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly in the inauguration of the project. He affirmed that the project represents a model of Egyptian-Tanzanian cooperation in the fields of energy, investment, and infrastructure, praising the ability of Egyptian companies to implement major projects according to international standards.
Mostafa Madbouly stated that the completion of the plant demonstrates the ability of Egyptian companies to execute major projects to international standards, particularly across Africa. He added that the project’s success will deepen Tanzania-Egypt cooperation in trade, investment, construction, roads, ports, agriculture, and energy.
AfroMedia also conveyed the statements of Tanzanian Energy Minister Deo Ndejembi, who explained that Tanzania is expanding its high-voltage transmission backbone to link generation assets with domestic load centers and regional power markets.
The minister added that Tanzania is moving toward strengthening regional electricity interconnection, supporting opportunities for energy exchange and trade with neighboring countries. He noted that Tanzania is negotiating electricity exports to Zambia, while pursuing power-exchange agreements with Kenya and other countries in the region, enhancing Tanzania’s position as an energy hub in East and Central Africa.
Former President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, also stated that the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant positions Tanzania as an energy and economic hub for East and Central Africa.
He emphasized the importance of utilizing this electricity capacity to support mineral beneficiation, agro-processing, industrial growth, and employment, stating:
“You have built the power. Now use it to build the future.”
Within the same framework, Hassan Ghazaly emphasized that the Julius Nyerere project reflects Africa’s possession of the capabilities and expertise that qualify it to lead a more integrated development path when there is political will and partnerships based on trust and mutual benefit.
He stressed the importance of the role of responsible African media in highlighting success stories and shedding light on projects that enhance economic and social stability.
Ghazaly added that the future of the continent is built through joint efforts and tangible achievements that serve the people. He stated that the Julius Nyerere project confirms that Egyptian-African relations are based on solid foundations of cooperation, integration, and shared interests, rather than slogans or speeches, within a vision based on unity of destiny and mutual cooperation among African countries, achieving common development without causing harm to any party, according to the principle of “No harm and no reciprocating harm.”
In response to some media narratives that attempt to present an inaccurate image of Egypt’s role in Africa, tangible facts confirm that such claims contradict the reality of African cooperation based on partnership and mutual development. Major projects do not require justification, as they provide their own evidence, and their results remain a witness to the true nature of relations between peoples.
