IPNEWS: As campaign for the much-publicized Nimba County By-election intensifies, the National Civil Society Council of Liberia (NCSCL), has warned against growing violence.

NCSCL in a statement issued Friday, April 11, 2025, the Council detested the looming tension in the county ahead of the main process.

In the statement issued under the signature of Chairperson, Madam Loretta Alethea Pope-Kai, the Council called on candidates and supporters to conduct their campaign activities in a more responsible manner that promotes peace.

The Council’s statement follows recent violent disruption of the campaign of Candidate Edith Gongloe-Weh in Gborplay, Nimba County.

According to report, the lone female candidate for the ensuing April 22 process managed to narrowly escape her attackers while engaging with voters in that part of the county (Gborplay, Electoral District #4).

As a result of the attack, the Senatorial candidate campaign was abruptly called off.

Prior to the latest violence, there had been growing tension among key contenders with some engaging in spewing hate and divisive messages.

It is based on these developments that the CSO Council is calling for a more peaceful and civil process.

“Having closely followed recent developments of growing tension in Nimba County ahead of the upcoming By-election in the county, the National Civil Society Council hereby cautions players in the process to remain calm,” said the Council.

“Particularly, we are urging all candidates and supporters to conduct their activities in a manner and form that promote peace. Candidates, particularly, must desist from preaching hate and divisive messages,” added the statement.

Meanwhile, the ensuing Nimba County By-election is triggered by the death of long-serving Senator Prince Yormie Johnson, alias “PYJ.”
