Last weekend, In a landmark verdict delivered on Friday, May 8, 2026, a 15-member jury at Criminal Court “C” in Monrovia fully acquitted former Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel D. Tweah Jr. of all corruption charges.
Tweah was accused of economic sabotage, theft of public funds, money laundering, and criminal conspiracy involving approximately US$6.2 million.
Jurors returned a “not guilty” verdict on all counts, leading Judge Ousman Feika to formally discharge Tweah and restore his freedom.
The defense, led by Cllr. Arthur Johnson, argued that the case was a disagreement over administrative procedures for national security spending rather than criminal theft, noting that the prosecution provided no direct evidence of personal gain.
While Tweah and G. Moses P. Cooper were fully cleared, other officials faced different outcomes:
- Nyenati Tuan (Former Acting Justice Minister): Convicted of theft of public funds and property.
- Jefferson Karmoh (Former National Security Advisor): Convicted of criminal facilitation and conspiracy.
- Stanley S. Ford (Former FIA Director General): Received hung verdicts on several charges.
The trial stemmed from 2023 Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) allegations regarding diverted national security funds. While Tweah hailed the outcome as a “triumph of innocence,” the verdict drew mixed reactions regarding the prosecution’s evidence and accountability efforts.
