IPNEWS: The Rev. Canon Michael Tuan Sie was elected as a Suffragan Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Liberia on March 13, 2026.

His election took place during the church’s 90th Convention held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Bolahun, Lofa County.

Rev. Sie was chosen as one of two new Suffragan Bishops for two additional dioceses in Liberia, specifically designated for the South Eastern (SE) Region.

His appointment is currently pending formal confirmation by the House of Bishops of the Anglican Church of the Province of West Africa.

The Rev. Canon Wilmot Merchant was also elected as a Suffragan Bishop during the same convention.

    Background of Michael Tuan Sie

He hails from Jekwekpo, Sasstown, in Grand Kru County, Liberia.

Prior to his election, he served as the Rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Camp Johnson Road in Monrovia.

He studied management at the University of Liberia and attended Cuttington University in Suakoko, Bong County.

He has been described by supporters as a charismatic and innovative leader, popular among urban congregations.

Canon Sie had previously been a leading candidate in the 2022 election for Bishop Coadjutor of the Episcopal Church of Liberia. His 2026 election as Suffragan Bishop fulfills a long-standing vision to decentralize the church’s responsibilities by creating more regional episcopal leadership.
