Former National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) Director General, Emma Metieh Glassco, is expected to serve as Special Guest of Honor at this year’s International Day for Women in Maritime celebration organized by the Women in Maritime of West and Central Africa (WIMOWCA) Liberia Chapter.
According to an official invitation issued by WIMOWCA Liberia Chapter President, Mrs. Olivia Faith Tah-Johnson, the event is scheduled to take place today May 18, 2026, at the Monrovia City Hall on Capitol Hill.
The celebration is expected to bring together key stakeholders, maritime professionals, students, and international partners committed to advancing women’s participation in the maritime and fisheries sectors.
Organizers disclosed that Madam Glassco was selected in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Liberia’s fisheries and maritime industry, including her role as founding President of WIMAFRICA Liberia Chapter and her continued advocacy for women’s empowerment within the sector.
Her leadership and professional accomplishments, they noted, have contributed significantly to strengthening Liberia’s visibility within regional and international maritime institutions.
As part of activities marking the celebration, WIMOWCA Liberia Chapter will also host a one-day career awareness and mentorship workshop on May 15, 2026.
The program will bring together graduating senior students from 32 high schools across Montserrado County, along with university departments offering maritime-related programs.
Organizers said the workshop is intended to educate, inspire, and empower young women to explore opportunities within the maritime industry through lectures, mentorship sessions, interactive discussions, and a guided educational tour of the Freeport of Monrovia.
The group further expressed confidence that Madam Glassco’s participation will serve as a major source of inspiration for young female students aspiring to build careers in fisheries, maritime administration, port operations, and other related professions.
International partners and maritime stakeholders continue to recognize Madam Glassco’s contributions as instrumental in promoting Liberia’s maritime sector and strengthening the role of women in maritime leadership both within Liberia and across the West and Central African region.
