IPNEWS: The Bong County Legislative Caucus has called for due process and a speedy trial for former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor, who is being held at the Monrovia Central Prison while facing criminal charges, including allegations related to drug trafficking and money laundering.
The Caucus expressed solidarity with Howard-Taylor, who previously represented Bong County in the Liberian Senate for 12 years. Still, it emphasized that its position should not be interpreted as an attempt to interfere with the judicial process.
Caucus Wants Fair and Transparent Proceedings
The lawmakers urged the government and judiciary to ensure that proceedings against the former Vice President are conducted fairly, transparently, and without political interference.
They stressed that Howard-Taylor is entitled to due process and must be treated as presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The Caucus also appealed to Liberians, particularly citizens of Bong County, to remain calm and avoid speculation or reaching conclusions before the courts have examined the evidence.
According to the lawmakers, the judicial process should be allowed to determine the case strictly on the evidence and the rule of law.
Howard-Taylor has denied the allegations against her, while her prosecution continues to generate intense political and public debate across Liberia.
