IPNEWS: The 2025 Global Hunger Index (GHI), put Liberia ranks at 112th out of 123 countries with sufficient data to calculate GHI scores, indicating a “serious” level of hunger under the Rescue Government but yet better then . the previous government under former president George Weah. For the 2024 GHI, Liberia was ranked 120th out of 127 countries, also classified as having a “serious” hunger level.
The Global Hunger Index is a tool that measures and tracks hunger globally, regionally, and nationally. It is calculated based on four key indicators:
The proportion of the population with insufficient caloric intake (around 38.4% in Liberia according to 2024 data, based on data collected from 2021 to 2023).
The proportion of children under five who have low height for their age, reflecting chronic undernutrition (29.8% in Liberia).
The proportion of children under five who have low weight for their height, indicating acute undernutrition (3.4% in Liberia).
The mortality rate of children under five (at 7.3% in Liberia).
Unlike the Rescue government under President Joseph Boakai, In the 2023 Global Hunger Index, under he Po-Poor Government of former President George M. Weah, puts Liberia Global Hunger ranked at 117th out of 125 countries with sufficient data.
The global Hunger score stood at 32.2.
Classified as “serious” based on the index’s scoring scale.
Liberia was ranked as the second hungriest country in West Africa, following only Niger.
However, the report notes that as of early 2026, subsequent reports have shown a decline in Liberia’s relative position. The 2024 GHI (latest available comprehensive report) reflects a score of 31.9, which currently ranks Liberia 120th out of 127 countries.
Despite the slight decrease in index score from the previous year, the country continues to struggle with high rates of undernourishment, which affects approximately 38.4% of the population.
