WEAH Vows To Resist Boakai Tyrannical Attempts

IPNEWS: Former Liberian President George Weah has vowed to resist what he describes as “tyrannical attempts” by current President Joseph Boakai.

Weah claims the administration is systematically undermining democracy, using the political system to launch selective “witch hunts” and target the opposition.

While Weah originally stated after his 2023 election defeat that he would step away from politics, he has since pivoted sharply and officially announced his candidacy to take back power in the 2029 presidential election.

Weah launched fierce criticism against the Boakai administration following the arrest and corruption indictments of several key officials from his previous administration. He argues these legal actions are politically motivated tactics to weaponize state institutions against his party.

The former world soccer great heavily pushed back against government efforts to link his party, the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), to multi-million-dollar cocaine seizures.

He maintains these discoveries happened after his peaceful transfer of power and accuses the ruling party of trying to eliminate dissent.

Former President Weah has repeatedly called on his base to utilize all constitutional, legal, and political means to challenge the ruling government’s agenda. This includes vowing to show personal support at courts for detained opposition members.

Weah comments come hours following the arrest and detention of top opposition figures—including former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor and lawmakers linked to a capital building incident—Weah publicly called on his base to rally. He announced plans to personally march to the courts to fight what he frames as a “witch-hunt”.

Political pundits warn that Weah’s call to resist the tyrannical regime might have far-reaching friction for Liberia’s political future especially,

Polarization Ahead of the 2029 Elections

Weah’s swift transition from a gracious conceding leader in late 2023 to an active, defiant opposition figure officially solidifies the 2029 presidential race. His vow to resist the ruling Unity Party (UP) effectively turns the upcoming years into a highly contentious, polarized referendum between two camps: Boakai’s governing establishment and Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) coalition.

Heightened Risk of Social and Civil Unrest

By explicitly calling on “CDCians” and ordinary citizens to mobilize at courtrooms and stage political resistance, there is an increased risk of localized clashes. While Weah has publicly urged his supporters to remain peaceful, bringing mass crowds out to protest judicial proceedings heavily tests the de-escalation capabilities and professional neutrality of state security forces.

    Legal and Judicial Weaponization Narratives

Weah’s resistance centers on claims that the Boakai administration is “weaponizing” the judiciary and anti-corruption audits to selectively target former officials while ignoring procurement violations within its own ranks. This public pushback erodes public trust in state legal institutions, casting standard anti-corruption and rule-of-law procedures as mere tools for political survival.

    Fragmented Legislature and Governance Gridlock

With Weah aggressively backing imprisoned lawmakers and claiming legislative lawlessness, the internal dynamics of Liberia’s Capitol Building will face severe gridlock. Political division between UP and CDC legislators will make passing crucial developmental, economic, and institutional reforms incredibly difficult.

    International and Regional Diplomatic Strain

Weah has proactively escalated local grievances to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other international partners. By warning regional bodies that Liberia’s democracy is experiencing a “systematic erosion,” he forces international allies out of their “wait and see” posture. This creates diplomatic pressure on the Boakai administration to justify its legal actions to ensure regional democratic stability is not compromised.
