IPNEWS: The President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Justice Ricardo Goncalves, has expressed deep concern over the continued reluctance of member states to implement the Court’s rulings, a situation he described as one of the most serious challenges confronting the regional judicial body.
Speaking on Wednesday during the Court’s weeklong outreach program in Congo Town, Liberia, Justice Goncalves emphasized that the refusal of member states to comply with the Court’s decisions severely undermines both the authority and credibility of ECOWAS’s legal system.
“The deliberate failure to enforce judgments weakens the rule of law within the ECOWAS community and limits citizens’ access to justice,” Justice Goncalves stated. “Member states must show stronger commitment to the obligations they have voluntarily undertaken under the ECOWAS Treaty.”
The outreach program, which brings together government officials, civil society representatives, and members of the judiciary, seeks to strengthen awareness of the Court’s mandate and promote greater collaboration among stakeholders in ensuring justice across the region.
Liberia Reaffirms Its Commitment
Responding to the concerns raised, Chief Justice Yamie Gbeisay of the Supreme Court of Liberia reaffirmed Liberia’s unwavering commitment to supporting the ECOWAS Court of Justice and upholding regional legal standards.
He encouraged Liberians to actively participate in the Court’s outreach initiative, noting that regional justice can only be effective when citizens and governments work together.
“Liberia remains committed to the ideals of ECOWAS and will continue to cooperate fully with the Court to ensure the enforcement of its decisions,” Chief Justice Gbeisay assured.
The outreach event, held at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, brought together a diverse audience of senior government officials, legal practitioners, human rights advocates, and members of the diplomatic corps.
Organizers say the initiative is part of a broader effort by the ECOWAS Court to enhance its visibility, foster understanding of its role, and address key challenges affecting the enforcement of its judgments across the region.
