IPNEWS: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., on Tuesday signed the Book of Condolence for the late former Vice President of Liberia, Deacon John D. Gray, during a solemn ceremony held in the Rotunda of the Capitol Building.
The President was warmly received by members of the National Legislature, led by House Speaker Richard Koon and Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence. Also present was former Senate Pro-Tempore Albert Chie, along with lawmakers from both chambers who joined in honoring the life and service of the late statesman.
President Boakai was accompanied by several high-ranking government officials, including Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Finance Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, Information Minister Jerolimek Matthew Piah, and Mines and Energy Minister Wilmot Paye, among others.
The ceremony was attended by family members of the late Honorable Gray, including his widow, Mrs. Laysiah Gray, and daughters, Mrs. Johnetta Zoe Gray Wento, Ms. Felecia C. Gray, Mrs. Precious S. Tilko, and Ms. Maima Gray.

President Boakai’s signing of the condolence book follows his earlier visit to the residence of the late Vice President on Saturday, December 7, 2024, where he personally extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
The President reaffirmed the government’s solidarity with the family and expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Honorable Gray, acknowledging his invaluable contributions to Liberia during a critical period of transition.
A Devoted Public Servant
The late Honorable John D. Gray, a devoted Deacon of the Effort Baptist Church in Paynesville, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2024, in Monrovia following a period of illness.
His distinguished career in public service includes his tenure as Vice President of Liberia during the transitional Blah-Gray Administration, formed in the aftermath of former President Charles G. Taylor’s resignation in August 2003. Gray’s appointment followed the elevation of then Vice President Moses Zeh Blah to the presidency after the passing of Vice President Enoch Dogolea.

In remarks at the ceremony, President Boakai reflected on Honorable Gray’s enduring legacy of leadership, integrity, and service to the nation.
“The Government of Liberia joins the nation in mourning the loss of this outstanding statesman,” President Boakai said. “His contributions to the governance and stability of Liberia during a critical time will forever be remembered. We extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to the family of the late former Vice President.”
