The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has officially launched a large-scale food and non-food item distribution initiative ahead of Liberia’s 178th Independence Day celebrations. The program, aimed at supporting group of 77 populations including persons with disabilities, orphans, the elderly, and various public welfare institutions, was formally introduced during the ceremony held at the NLA headquarters.
The distribution, which will began on July 14, 2025, is set to benefit over 182 institutions across night counties, starting with Montserrado County. Items to be distributed include 3,000 kilograms of rice, 2,500 gallons of vegetable oil, and 2,500 packets of vita. The total cost of the initiative is estimated to exceed $200,000 USD.
Speaking at the launch, the Director General of the NLA, Hon. Reginald Kpan Nagbe, emphasized the Authority’s commitment to national development and social inclusion. “This is not just a gesture of charity but a commitment to equity and dignity. We are determined to ensure that marginalized groups, particularly the Group of 77, are included in national programs, including upcoming lottery initiatives that aim to provide employment opportunities,” he stated.
Hon. Nagbe also acknowledged the significant role played by the Office of the Second Lady in supporting the project, praising their partnership in reaching Liberia’s most group of 77.
The NLA is also investing in the education of disadvantaged youth, with 98 students currently benefiting from scholarships to attend various universities across the country.
Representing the Group of 77, Rev. Peter Flomo, President of the National Union of Organizations for the Disabled, expressed gratitude to the NLA and the Office of the Second Lady for their continued support. “We are thankful that the NLA has remembered us. This initiative not only brings relief but also restores hope. We call on other ministries and agencies to follow the good example set by the NLA,” he said.
The food distribution campaign is expected to conclude before July 26, Liberia’s Independence Day, as part of national efforts to uplift underprivileged communities during the festive season.
