Liberia has reached another historic milestone in global shipping, becoming the first ship registry in the world to surpass 300 million gross tons (GT) in fleet size, further solidifying its status as the world’s leading maritime registry.
The achievement marks a major boost for Liberia’s maritime sector and reinforces the country’s longstanding dominance in the international shipping industry. Managed by the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) in partnership with its global registry manager, the registry continues to attract some of the world’s largest and most advanced commercial vessels.
Industry experts say the milestone reflects Liberia’s strong reputation for regulatory compliance, safety standards, and efficient maritime services, making it the preferred flag of choice for shipowners across the globe.
Liberia’s open registry, established in 1948, has grown into one of the most influential maritime institutions worldwide, contributing significantly to the country’s economy through revenue generation, employment opportunities, and international partnerships.
Officials have described the accomplishment as a testament to Liberia’s resilience and strategic importance in global trade, noting that the country remains at the forefront of shaping international shipping standards.
With over 300 million gross tons now under its registry, Liberia continues to strengthen its position as a maritime powerhouse, underscoring its critical role in facilitating global commerce and maintaining one of the most trusted ship registries in the world.
