IPNEWS: Liberia after more than 35 years without a resident mission, the Republic of Liberia has officially reopened its Embassy in New Delhi, India, marking a major milestone in Liberia–India relations and the restoration of Liberia’s diplomatic footprint in Asia.
Foreign Affairs Minister, H.E. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, inaugurated the Embassy on Wednesday on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., and the Government and people of Liberia.
The mission was closed more than three decades ago due to geopolitical and economic challenges.
Successive Liberian administrations had pursued its reopening, citing India’s growing role as a key partner in education, health, trade and development.
Minister Nyanti described the reopening as both a diplomatic achievement and a practical step to deliver services to Liberians.
“After more than three decades, Liberia once again has a permanent diplomatic home in India,” Minister Nyanti said.
“This is a major milestone for our country and a testament to President Boakai’s commitment to strengthening Liberia’s global partnerships and ensuring that our diplomacy delivers tangible results for our people.”
She acknowledged the efforts of previous administrations that laid the groundwork for the mission’s return.
The reopening comes at a time when thousands of Liberian students are pursuing degrees and professional training in India, and many Liberians travel there for specialized medical treatment.
A resident Embassy, officials said, will provide direct consular assistance, support scholarship programs, and expand cooperation in healthcare and capacity building.
Beyond consular duties, the New Delhi mission will serve as Liberia’s primary platform for economic diplomacy in Asia.
Priorities include attracting Indian investment, facilitating trade, and deepening partnerships in agriculture, technology, infrastructure, and healthcare.
India remains one of Liberia’s most important development partners, with ongoing cooperation in education, health, agriculture, infrastructure and private-sector development.
The Government of Liberia expressed appreciation to the Government of India for its support in facilitating the establishment of the Embassy.
Officials said the mission will work to mobilize technical assistance and development support while advancing President Boakai’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.
The reopening signals Liberia’s renewed commitment to South-South cooperation and to positioning the country to benefit from India’s growth in trade, technology and investment.
