IPNEWS: Liberia has taken a major step toward restoring its once-thriving coffee industry by signing a US$60 million implementation agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture and JR Farms Group Inc. under the Liberia Coffee Prosperity Partnership.
The 20-year initiative, running from 2026 to 2045, is expected to transform coffee production across seven counties while creating new economic opportunities for nearly 200,000 smallholder farmers.
The program will benefit farmers in Bomi, Bong, Lofa, Nimba, Grand Gedeh, Maryland, and Grand Cape Mount Counties through the distribution of improved coffee seedlings, the establishment of nurseries, farmer training, enhanced processing facilities, and stronger access to domestic and international markets.
A key focus of the partnership is the revival and promotion of Liberica coffee, a variety with deep historical roots in Liberia, alongside Robusta and Arabica coffee. The initiative seeks to strengthen every stage of the coffee value chain—from production and processing to marketing and export.
Speaking on behalf of Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, Deputy Minister for Planning and Development Hon. David K. Akoi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to rebuilding Liberia’s coffee sector and creating sustainable economic opportunities for farming communities.
The agreement marks one of the country’s most significant agricultural investments in recent years and reflects renewed efforts to position Liberian coffee in regional and international markets. If successfully implemented, the partnership is expected to boost rural livelihoods, increase export earnings, and restore Liberia’s reputation as a producer of premium coffee.
