Grand Bassa County Superintendent Karyou Johnson has welcomed President Joseph Nyumah Boakai and guests to Buchanan for Liberia’s 179th Independence Day celebration, describing the county’s selection as host as a historic moment and a recognition of Grand Bassa’s significant role in Liberia’s political, economic, and cultural development. He said the celebration reflects the nation’s resilience, unity, and shared commitment to progress.
Johnson noted that Grand Bassa, one of Liberia’s three original counties, has long contributed to nation-building through its strategic seaport, industries, cultural heritage, and educational institutions. He also acknowledged the contributions of major investment partners, including ArcelorMittal Liberia, the Liberia Agricultural Company, Equatorial Palm Oil, and Grand Bassa University.
The superintendent praised President Boakai for ongoing infrastructure and rural electrification projects, noting that many communities are regaining access to electricity after decades without power. He said the restoration of electricity is creating opportunities for education, healthcare, and economic growth, while restoring hope and dignity to residents across the county.
Johnson also described the decision to hold the 179th Independence Day celebration in Grand Bassa as a strong endorsement of Liberia’s decentralization efforts. Calling on Liberians to remain united, urging citizens to use the anniversary to renew their commitment to peace, inclusion, and national development, while welcoming visitors to Grand Bassa, which he described as “a land of rich history, a people of resilience, and a county of pride.”
