The Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) has called on former President George Manneh Weah to grant investigators full access to determine the exact cause of a recent fire outbreak at his residence.

Deputy Minister for Public Affairs, Daniel O. Sando, told journalists at MICAT’s regular press briefing on Thursday, September 25, 2025, that preliminary reports suggest the fire started as a result of an electrical shock in the former President’s bedroom.

According to Sando, fire fighters responded in time and battled the flames for nearly three hours before bringing the situation under control.

However, he disclosed that the Liberia National Fire Service investigation team was reportedly prevented from conducting a full probe by individuals at the residence.

“We are calling on the former President to allow investigators to establish what really happened. Liberians deserve a clear picture of the incident,” Sando said.

He cautioned against misinformation, noting that some individuals were already pointing fingers at the government.

“Freedom of speech comes with responsibility, and we should be mindful of what we say or write on social media,” he added.

In a separate update, Sando highlighted President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s participation at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he has been engaging with world leaders on Liberia’s development agenda.

He said President Boakai assured African leaders that Liberia’s recent election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) represents not only the country but the entire continent.

As part of his engagements, President Boakai held bilateral talks with His Highness Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Crown Prince of Kuwait, who represented the Emir.

Discussions focused on strengthening ties between Liberia and Kuwait, with both sides pledging expanded cooperation in health, education, agriculture, and infrastructure.

The Crown Prince congratulated Liberia on its election to the UNSC and promised Kuwait’s support during its tenure, drawing on Kuwait’s experience as a Council member in 2018–2019.

President Boakai, in turn, thanked Kuwait for its commitment, particularly its role in financing road construction projects linking Bong and Lofa Counties.

Senior officials from both Liberia and Kuwait attended the high-level meeting, which also advanced the prospect of establishing a Joint Commission to formalize bilateral agreements.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Sando dismissed rumors circulating on social media that Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung was seriously ill and had left the country.

He clarified that the Vice President is currently in Ghana on official duties.

“Liberians are loving and caring people, we should stop writing negative things about one another,” Sando urged.
