Former House Speaker Dr. Bhofal Chambers is facing intense criticism in Maryland County, particularly in Pleebo Sodoken District #2, over his recent advocacy efforts for workers at the Maryland Oil Palm Plantation (MOPP) and the Cavalla Rubber Corporation (CRC). Some people perceive his criticism of labor practices at these companies as an attempt to regain public attention ahead of the 2029 presidential and legislative elections.
On his radio station, Voice of Hope Radio, Dr. Chambers has been highlighting the poor living conditions of workers at MOPP and CRC. He cites inadequate housing, lack of clean water, poor sanitation, and insufficient healthcare facilities as major concerns. According to Dr. Chambers, these companies have failed to fulfill their obligations, including building a promised elementary school for workers’ children since signing their concession agreement in 2011.
Dr. Chambers claims that if he were still the representative of the district, he would have addressed some of these concerns through his advocacy on the floor of the national legislature. He vows to continue advocating for the rights of Pleebo Sodoken District residents, engaging with the national government and partners to address these issues.
However, his efforts have sparked debate on social media, radio stations, and street corners, with many questioning his potential impact and motives. Critics wonder why Dr. Chambers didn’t address these issues during his 18-year tenure as representative and how he plans to make a difference now that he’s no longer in power.
The controversy has raised questions about Dr. Chambers’ legacy and the effectiveness of his advocacy efforts. Some argue that both companies have operated in the district for years, and Dr. Chambers had the power to effect change as a representative and later as House Speaker from 2018 to 2023. They question his motives, suggesting that he is only speaking out now for political gain.
One resident, Old Man Bessie B. Bee, expressed skepticism about Dr. Chambers’ efforts. She stated that the community had engaged him several times regarding their redundant processes with CRC, including issues related to her late husbands, but nothing had come of it. She added that many complaints from workers, including women’s issues and loans and heath delivery as promises made during campaign messages, were reported to his district office while he was serving as House Speaker but were never considered.
“Why now?” she asked. “He is playing political games and should not be taken seriously. The district is lagging behind and needs to progress.”
