IPNEWS: Liberia’s opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has launched protests and emergency meetings following the detention and indictment of former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor.
It may be recalled, on August 19, 2026, Liberia’s Justice Ministry intercepted former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor (who served from 2018 to 2024) at Roberts International Airport as she attempted to leave the country.
She was taken to the Liberia National Police (LNP) headquarters and charged under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act, the Penal Law, and Anti-Money Laundering laws. The charges stem from a high-profile $317 million transnational narcotics investigation.
The CDC Leadership officially condemned the arrest, calling the charges “bogus” and labeling the actions a tyrannical abuse of state power meant to persecute opposition members.
Led by former Representative Moses Acarous Gray, crowds of defiant [CDC partisans marched toward the LNP Headquarters in solidarity with Howard-Taylor.
Security forces barricaded the police headquarters and deployed tear gas to disperse the crowds. Activists were redirected to assemble at local party sub-offices to prevent catastrophic escalations.
Prior to this protest, Former President George Weah released a sharp statement accusing President Joseph Boakai’s administration of weaponizing the justice system. Weah announced that the CDC will resist the government “on all Fronts” using all legal and political avenues.
The Liberian government maintains that the multi-million-dollar drug probe will strictly follow the evidence, regardless of an individual’s political affiliation or former status. Tensions remain highly elevated in Monrovia.
Meanwhile, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) vehemently condemns the harassment, intimidation, detention, and apparent fabrication of charges against Liberia’s former Vice President, Her Excellency Chief Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor.
In a statement issued in Monrovia, Atty. Janga Augustus Kowo, National Chairman, Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), states that the pursuit of allegations against the former Vice President—without a clear, credible, and transparent explanation—raises serious concerns about political persecution and the weaponization of the justice system. This action is calculated to divert public attention from known suspects and persons of interest whose roles require thorough and impartial investigation.
“The degrading treatment meted out to the former Vice President is not only an affront to her dignity and constitutional rights but also a dangerous threat to Liberia’s democracy, peace, and stability.
The Liberian people deserve the truth through an independent, transparent, and credible investigation. The government must not use unsubstantiated charges, intimidation, or procedural subterfuge to shield security officials or other state actors who may be implicated.
Any attempt to damage the reputation of former Vice President Howard-Taylor or manipulate public opinion through the misuse of state institutions constitutes a tyrannical abuse of power. The CDC will firmly resist such conduct through every lawful and democratic means available.” The CDC Statement read.
The CDC demands that the government, and publicly disclose the factual and legal basis for its actions against the former Vice President; Guarantee her constitutional rights, dignity, safety, and unhindered access to legal counsel; Immediately end all politically motivated harassment and intimidation; and ensure an independent and impartial investigation of every person implicated in the matter, regardless of political affiliation or official position.
The CDC therefore calls upon civil society, religious leaders, the media, political parties, the diplomatic community, and all democratic forces to stand together in defense of constitutional governance, due process, and the rule of law.
“An attack on the rights of one political leader is a warning to every Liberian.” CDC statement concludes.
