ArcelorMittal Liberia Hospital in Buchanan Praised for Free, Quality Healthcare

Buchanan, Grand Bassa County – Residents of Buchanan and surrounding communities in Grand Bassa County are commending the ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) Stephen A. Tolbert Memorial Hospital for delivering free, high-quality healthcare services, describing the facility as a vital source of hope and healing in the region.

Originally constructed to serve AML employees and their dependents, the hospital has broadened its services to the general public, offering free outpatient care to anyone in need—regardless of affiliation with the company.

Local residents are hailing the hospital’s life-changing impact. Angeline Neese, a mother from the Sawmill Community, shared: “I brought my baby to the hospital for the second time, and both times we received excellent treatment. The staff took good care of us.”

Mercy Zahn Gboe, a resident of Flower Mill, added: “I came because my cousin brought her child here and was well treated. My father also brought my little brother and received all the needed medicines—free of charge.”

Gladis Cooper from Kaytor Town noted the hospital’s inclusive nature: “Even though my husband doesn’t work with AML, we still receive treatment here for free. They treat everyone with care and respect.”

The hospital’s growing role in community healthcare is part of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s wider Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment, which seeks to uplift lives in its operational areas through strategic investment in health, education, and infrastructure.

According to AML’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Garfee Williams, the hospital is increasingly serving the broader public. “Last week alone, out of 339 consultations, 53 percent were non-AML patients,” he revealed. “AML staff accounted for 6 percent, dependents 19 percent, and contractors, subcontractors, and Phase Two project employees made up 22 percent.”

To ensure uninterrupted service, AML regularly procures essential medicines and supplies based on actual demand data from both employee and community cases.

The hospital operates in full compliance with Ministry of Health guidelines and provides a wide range of services, including health education, immunizations, antenatal care, family planning, diagnostic imaging (X-ray and ultrasound), laboratory testing, infectious disease treatment (including TB and HIV/AIDS), and general surgery. In the past month alone, the hospital successfully conducted more than 11 major operations.

Dr. Williams emphasized AML’s ongoing commitment to healthcare improvement: “We will continue enhancing the quality of care and expanding services to meet the needs of our employees, their families, and the communities we proudly serve.”

The expansion of the hospital’s reach stands as a testament to ArcelorMittal Liberia’s broader mission—not only to help drive Liberia’s economy, but to invest in the long-term well-being of its people, one patient and one community at a time.
