ArcelorMittal Liberia’s (AML) ongoing housing renovation project is not only providing decent accommodation for Liberian staff and their families in both Buchanan and Yekepa, but also creating opportunities for Liberian-owned businesses and generating jobs for ordinary citizens.

As part of the project, several local contractors have been contracted to carry out extensive renovations across AML’s concessions.

One of the companies benefiting is Baawo Group of Companies, a fully Liberian-owned construction firm. In Buchanan, Baawo Group is currently undertaking full-scale renovations on two housing units in

Loops 2 and 3, employing dozens of skilled and unskilled Liberian workers in the process.

Michael Baawo, the CEO of Baawo Group of Companies has commended ArcelorMittal Liberia for prioritizing local businesses in its operations.

Baawo said the initiative is a clear demonstration of the company’s commitment to empowering Liberian entrepreneurs while creating indirect employment opportunities for many.

“ArcelorMittal Liberia’s housing renovation project is not just improving living conditions for its workers; it is also giving Liberian-owned firms the chance to grow and prove their capacity,” Baawo

    said.

“This means jobs for ordinary Liberians, empowerment for local businesses, and economic growth for our communities.”

The renovation drive is part of AML’s broader investment in community and employee welfare, ensuring that its staff live in safe, comfortable, and modernized housing units, while strengthening local participation in its value chain.

Through initiatives like this, AML continues to demonstrate its role as a long-term partner in Liberia’s development, supporting local content, building capacity, and empowering Liberians at multiple levels of society

In Nimba County, AML is also working with Liberian contractors to renovate a total of seventy housing units, beginning with Area R and other areas across the township.

In furtherance of its commitment to empowering locals, AML also requested that the different contractors it hires for the renovation of the housing units to make mandatory recruitment from the communities

As a result of this, dozens of young people in communities adjacent to the concession areas in Grand Bassa and Nimba counties have been provided temporary employment opportunities.
