Ahead of 2029 Polls: Cllr. Fonati  Koffa Emerges Top Choice For Montserrado County Senatorial Seat

IPNEWS: Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, has emerged as a potential top contender for the 2029 Montserrado County Senatorial election based on recent online opinion polls. While formal campaigning for the 2029 elections has not officially begun, internal discussions within the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) suggest Koffa is viewed as a strong candidate to challenge the current incumbent, Senator Abraham Darius Dillon.

The Recent online opinion polls, such as those shared by local media influencers, indicate that Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa is a favorite among potential voters to unseat the current Montserrado Senator.

Internal sources from the CDC camp indicate the party is confident that Koffa’s professional background and leadership experience make him a formidable opponent for the 2029 race.

Other figures frequently mentioned in early 2029 polls and discussions include:

Also, former Representative Acarous Moses Gray, won a separate online opinion poll with over 62% of the votes.

Meia Executive and Ativist Martin K. N. Kollie, received endorsements from social media influencers as a potential strong voice for the youth.

Incumbent Senator Abraham Darius Dillon, remains a central figure in these polls as the person most candidates are vying to replace.

Koffa’s standing is notable given his recent role as Speaker of the House of Representatives, though he has faced political challenges, including controversial impeachment attempts and investigations into legislative stability.

The next senatorial elections are scheduled for October 9, 2029 (the second Tuesday of October). The upcoming cycle is expected to be highly competitive, with a particular focus on whether the CDC can reclaim its stronghold in Montserrado County.

    Recenty, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa

has reportedly announced that he will not seek a third term as the Representative for

    Grand Kru County District #2

    .

This decision comes amid a turbulent period in his political career and personal life, following a major legislative standoff and ongoing legal battles. Key details regarding his status and recent activities include:

Koffa has indicated he will not seek another term in the House, leading to intense speculation regarding his endorsement of a successor for his Grand Kru seat. Some political observers suggest he may be eyeing a Senate bid in 2029 instead.

After nearly seven-month impasse in the 55th Legislature between his “Rule of Law Caucus” and the “Majority Bloc,” Koffa officially resigned as Speaker of the House of Representatives on May 12, 2025. He was succeeded by Richard Nagbe Koon.

In June 2025, Koffa and several other lawmakers were indicted on charges of arson, criminal facilitation, and conspiracy related to a December 2024 fire that destroyed the Joint Chambers of the Capitol Building. He spent time in pretrial detention before being released on a $1.8 million property bond. As of March 2026, he was still actively contesting the trial process.

Last week, Cllr. Koffa expanded his influence in the media sector by acquiring Freedom FM (formerly owned by Freedom Communications Inc.).

Despite his resignation as Speaker and legal troubles, he returned to legislative sessions in early 2026 to continue serving as the representative for Grand Kru District #2.
