LIBERIA: Sen. Pennue and Former Rep. Acarous Gray Word of words Heats up

IPNEWS: Senator Zoe Pennue (Grand Gedeh County) and former Representative Acarous Gray (Montserrado District #8) are engaged in a heated public feud, characterized by personal insults and allegations of financial misconduct.

Acarous Gray has accused Senator Pennue of “eating” US$25,000 reportedly provided by former President George Weah for a church project in Grand Gedeh.

Senator Pennue responded by dismissing Gray’s political standing, claiming Gray was merely a “bag boy” or “car washer” for former Representative Rufus Neufville before being “packaged” by George Weah for his legislative seat.

Gray challenged Pennue to a public debate on Grand Gedeh Radio, stating he would apologize if Pennue could show a single bill he sponsored that was signed into law.

The dispute reflects broader fractures within the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), with Gray positioning himself as a “Frontline General” for a 2029 comeback while Pennue remains in active office representing Grand Gedeh.

Currently serving as Senator of Grand Gedeh County.

Former Representative of Montserrado District #8; he is currently renovating his district office and leading outreach efforts to rebuild influence for the 2029 elections.

The term “Word of Words” in this context refers to the exchange of verbal attacks between the two politicians, which has been widely publicized on Liberian radio stations like Top FM and Grand Gedeh Radio.

The confusion began after Grand Gedeh County Senator Zoe Emmanuel Pennue publicly accused former President George Weah of failing to fulfill significant promises made to the county during his presidency.

Senator Pennue announced plans to formally apologize to the Elim Chapel Assemblies of God (AG) Church in Zwedru. He claimed he personally took Weah to the church in 2021, where the then-president promised to complete the church building—a pledge Pennue says was never honored.

Pennue criticized the state of Grand Gedeh during Weah’s tenure, stating that “bad road medicine” was a scam. He highlighted that during the Weah administration, citizens suffered due to terrible road conditions that led to food spoilage, specifically mentioning “rotten frozen food” in Zwedru due to delivery delays.

Pennue has distanced himself from his former political ally, praising the current Boakai administration for its efforts in road maintenance and stating he is ready to support legislative moves for development, such as the “yellow machines” infrastructure project.

In response to Pennue’s criticisms, former Representative Acarous Gray alleged that US$25,000 had actually been provided to Senator Pennue for the church project.

The Senator has flatly denied receiving these funds, calling the claims a character assassination and threatening to take the matter to the Temple of Justice to clear his name.

Critics and some county stakeholders have viewed Pennue’s recent statements as “cheap politics” or an attempt to align himself with the current government as he looks toward re-election in 2029.
