IPNEWS: Harper, Maryland County – William V. S. Tubman University (TU) hosted its 5th Freshman Induction Ceremony on Friday. The university welcomed over 700 new students, the largest freshman class in its history, according to the Division of Student Enrollment Management. The event took place under the inspiring theme “The Rising.”
Freshman induction is an important academic tradition that officially welcomes new students to the Tubman University community. It marks the start of their academic journey and their commitment to uphold the university’s values of discipline, integrity, and innovation.
In his special address, Dr. Olu Q. Menjay, President and CEO of Tubman University, praised the freshmen for selecting TU as the foundation for their academic and professional careers. “This is the first and largest freshman class in the history of Tubman University,” Dr. Menjay declared. “We thank you for choosing TU to pursue your undergraduate education.”
Dr. Menjay encouraged the students to become sources of positive change and to avoid those who might try to exploit young people for harmful purposes. “Do not let anyone use your hands to destroy Liberia,” he cautioned. “Think for yourself, be disciplined, and strive to stand out among your peers.”
Quoting the late Liberian educator Wilmot Blyden, Dr. Menjay stressed that without proper training and moral guidance, young people’s energy can be misused to cause harm instead of building the nation.
During the ceremony, students recited the Freshman Oath, pledging to respect and follow the university’s rules and regulations. “As students of Tubman University, we agree to obey and abide by all rules governing the institution,” they stated in unison.
Dr. Menjay also noted TU’s growing academic presence beyond Liberia. Several TU students are currently pursuing advanced degrees abroad—four in the United States, two in India, one in South Africa, and two in China. “Our goal is to ensure that Tubman University students can compete internationally through hard work, discipline, and academic excellence,” he said.
Friday’s induction ended on a hopeful note as faculty and students embraced the theme “The Rising.” The event highlighted Tubman University’s mission to empower a new generation of ethical, innovative, and globally competitive leaders for Liberia’s future.
