IPNEWS: The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) and the Ministry of Health have officially launched the Mpox Operation Campaign under the theme “Operation Find All Mpox Cases,” aimed at curbing the spread of the viral disease across the country.
Speaking during the launching ceremony that was held Monday, November 3.2025 at the Gardnersville Towh Hall, Dr. Sia Wata Camanor, Interim Director General of NPHIL, said Montserrado County was selected as the starting point for the nationwide campaign because it remains the most affected area. She disclosed that Montserrado accounts for 69 percent of the 1,290 confirmed Mpox cases in Liberia, making it the epicenter of the outbreak.
“Montserrado County faces greater challenges than any other county, with the highest number of confirmed cases and fatality rates,” Dr. Camanor explained.
She stressed that controlling Mpox transmission is critical not only for safeguarding public health but also for restoring investor confidence in Liberia. According to her, effective disease management could encourage international partners to increase support for the country’s development efforts.
Providing an update on the national Mpox situation, Finda Smith, Acting Chair of the Mpox National Incident Management System, said Liberia recorded 1,000 cases between January and October 2025, showing how familiar the country has become with the disease since its reemergence.
Smith revealed that 1,291 cases have been confirmed out of 2,287 suspected cases, with six deaths reported nationwide representing a case fatality rate of 0.5 percent. She added that all 15 counties have recorded Mpox cases, with 60 percent of infections originating from Montserrado County alone.
Meanwhile, Dr. Yeah Nemah, Director of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) at the Ministry of Health, disclosed progress in Liberia’s Mpox vaccination efforts. He said the country received 10,800 doses of Mpox vaccines six months ago, which were distributed across all counties.
“Of that number, about 9,000 doses have already been administered,” Dr. Nemah said. “Based on our request for more support, Liberia has now received an additional 40,000 doses of Mpox vaccines from the global health community.”
The new vaccine supply is expected to strengthen the government’s campaign to identify, treat, and prevent new Mpox cases nationwide.
