IPNEWS: Liberia is gearing up for its 4th Cycle Universal Periodic Review (UPR) before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, scheduled for November 1–8, 2025.
The Ministry of Justice on Thursday convened a high-level coordination meeting in Monrovia to complete final preparations for the country’s participation in the global human rights assessment process.
Chaired by Justice Minister and Attorney General, Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, who will lead the Liberian delegation to the 50th Session of the Human Rights Council, the meeting focused on Liberia’s progress in implementing previous UPR recommendations and on strengthening its human rights commitments.
Minister Tweh emphasized that the UPR provides a vital opportunity for Liberia to reaffirm its commitment to human rights and demonstrate advances in governance, justice reform, and social protection.
The delegation to Geneva includes Hon. Emmanuel Yarl, Chair of the House Committee on Civil and Human Rights; Cllr. James Verdier, Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the House; Atty. Gabriel F. Ndupellar, Assistant Minister for Justice; and Kutaka Devine Togbah, Director of the Human Rights Division at the Ministry of Justice.
The United Nations Human Rights Office in Liberia will also participate in the process, represented by Mr. Christian Nukosa.
Minister Tweh commended the inter-ministerial technical team for its diligent work in preparing Liberia’s national report, urging the delegation to present an honest and unified account of the nation’s progress, challenges, and reform efforts.
“Liberia’s engagement in this review is not only about accountability but also about reaffirming our shared values of justice, equality, and respect for human dignity,” Tweh noted.
