‘Liberians Are Struggling Under Boakai Gov’t’, Says ANC Leader Cummings

Monrovia, Liberia – The Political Leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), Mr. Alexander B. Cummings, has described the current economic situation under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration as “poor” and “unbearable” for many Liberians.

Speaking recently on Spoon Talk, Cummings said a growing number of Liberians are living in poverty, with nearly 30 percent of the population reportedly going to bed hungry each night. He stressed that, if elected in 2029, his administration would prioritize economic growth and improved living conditions for ordinary citizens.

“Liberians are poor, and almost 30% sleep hungry,” Cummings stated. “If we are elected in 2029, we are going to work on the economy and ensure a better life for our people.”

Reflecting on the ANC’s performance in the last presidential election, Cummings admitted that weak public engagement, poor media visibility, and limited grassroots outreach contributed to the party’s low results — just 1.06 percent of the total votes cast.

“Our 1.06% vote was caused by poor public engagement and weak media outreach. Our message did not reach the people well, but we have learned from that,” he noted.

Cummings also cited internal challenges, including party divisions and limited financial resources, as major setbacks to the ANC’s campaign. He acknowledged that the party did not adequately connect with Liberia’s large youth population, which makes up about 65 percent of the nation’s citizens.

“We didn’t focus enough on the youth, and the breaking up of the party also affected us,” he added.

The ANC leader criticized the Boakai administration for what he described as a failure to deliver economic relief and meaningful opportunities for the people.

“Liberians are struggling under the Boakai government. There is no chance for progress—just a poor economy and growing hardship,” Cummings concluded.

Recently, Opposition leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) stated that the election which brought President Joseph Boakai and others to power was fraudulent.

Responding first itme to what many belived was a desmond performance and out of touch with the ordinary Liberians resulting to 1% in the 2023 elections, the ANC political leader, Alexander B. Cummings called his 1% vote share in the last election a “fraud,” designed to make him politically irrelevant.

He stated that if his support was truly that small, major candidates like former President Weah and current President Boakai would not have sought his alliance for the second round of voting. Cummings made these claims during a public engagement at a major intellectual center in Monrovia, speaking to citizens on key national issues.

It may be recalled, Mr. Alexander Cummings rejected the official results of the 2023 Liberian elections, which credited him with just 1.65% of the vote. Despite his claims that the results were manipulated, he later reflected on the election and accepted the outcome as the Liberian people’s decision .

Mr. Cummings initially stated that the figures were manipulated to sideline his candidacy, referencing the fact that both major candidates in the runoff election—George Weah and Joseph Boakai—courted his support afterward, a move he saw as contradictory to the low percentage he supposedly received.

By early 2025, Cummings had shifted his public stance. He acknowledged the results and the decision made by the Liberian electorate. While accepting the election’s outcome, Cummings has remained an active political voice. He continues to advocate for governance reform, promote accountability, and engage with civil society and youth groups.

Recently in September, the Alternative National Congress (ANC) announced that all leadership positions, including Cummings’s role as Political Leader, had been declared vacant ahead of a party convention. This move comes as the ANC reevaluates its strategy following the 2023 election results.By: Andrew B Weah
