LFA to Inaugurate Three Pitches Today

The Liberia Football Association (LFA), with support from FIFA, will on Monday officially inaugurate three new pitches: a standard-size, FIFA-approved playing pitch in Gompa, Nimba County, and two FIFA Arena mini-pitches in Montserrado and Margibi Counties.

The Gompa project, funded through the FIFA Forward Program, began on November 4, 2024, and features major upgrades including the installation of floodlights, an underground sprinkler system, inner fencing, and roofing for spectator stands. The facility will host various LFA competitions, including grassroots tournaments, as part of the LFA’s broader infrastructure development drive under the leadership of President Mustapha Raji.

Ahead of the Gompa event, the LFA and FIFA will also dedicate two FIFA Arena mini-pitches, each measuring 20×40 meters (7-a-side), in Montserrado and Margibi. The facilities are located at Bible Way Mission School along the RIA Road and the EBK Barracks in Margibi.

The Arena project, introduced as a pilot initiative, was implemented by the LFA in collaboration with FIFA to promote grassroots football development for boys and girls by installing artificial mini-pitches in school and community settings.

Liberia is one of eleven member associations—known as the “Starting XI”—benefiting from this pilot phase. Championed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the initiative seeks to build over 1,000 mini-pitches worldwide, creating more opportunities for children to play football.

FIFA’s Regional Director for Africa and Deputy Chief Member Associations Officer, Mr. Gelson Fernandes, along with FIFA Development Officer El Hadji Diop, will represent FIFA at the ceremonies.
