IPNEWS: Amos B. Johnson, 39, was formally charged with murder and forwarded to the Monrovia City Court on Thursday, January 2, 2025, following allegations that he killed his father, Eli Johnson, on December 25, 2024, in a dispute over Christmas money.

    Police Investigation Findings

According to the Liberia National Police (LNP), Amos Johnson allegedly struck his father on the head with a rock after Eli Johnson refused to give him Christmas money. The blow rendered the victim unconscious, and he was later pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

The police report revealed that the defendant had a history of harassing and threatening his father, including previous threats to eliminate him.

The investigation detailed that on the night of December 24-25, father and son were together at home when the fatal altercation occurred. Police observed blood and scratches on Amos Johnson’s hands and face, suggesting a struggle had taken place.

    Attempt to Flee

The report also stated that after the incident, Amos Johnson became aggressive when questioned by a neighbor, Vasco Hengbetus, about his father’s whereabouts. Johnson allegedly threatened to harm Hengbetus before fleeing to the Red Light Police Station, where he sought refuge and was subsequently arrested.

    Denial of Allegations

Despite the evidence, Amos Johnson has denied involvement in his father’s death. He claimed he had no knowledge of how his father was murdered and maintained his innocence during police questioning.

    Legal Proceedings

Amos Johnson faces murder charges under Liberia’s Penal Code. If convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence or potentially capital punishment, depending on the court’s ruling.

The case has shocked the community, with many residents expressing sadness over the tragic loss of Eli Johnson and the alleged circumstances of his death.

As the judicial process unfolds, Amos Johnson remains in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings. The incident highlights the need for conflict resolution and community intervention to prevent such tragedies.
