IPNEWS: The Chair of the Wash Legislative Caucus Secretariat, Representative Thomas Alexander Goshua, has emphasized the urgent need for political will and increased budgetary support for Liberiaโs Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector.
Speaking on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, during the Caucusโ budget engagement meeting at the Capitol, Representative Goshua, urged all stakeholders to prioritize WASH as a critical national sector, not just in rhetoric but through concrete funding in the national budget.
He underscored the importance of building consensus and deepening accountability to meet Liberiaโs WASH targets under the ARREST agenda and Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing that access to clean water and sanitation must become a lasting reality for every Liberian household.
Representative Goshua stressed that WASH remains a vital development priority, urging lawmakers to support sector investments and hold stakeholders accountable.
He expressed confidence that through collective effort, Liberia can make significant strides toward universal access to clean water and sanitation, ultimately improving health, education, and economic outcomes for its citizens.
In a related development, the Head of Secretariat at UYPETDL Civil Society Organization of Liberia, Timothy Kpeh, highlighted the significance of collaboration among government institutions, development partners, and civil society.
Mr. Kpeh expressed appreciation for the continued support from UNDP, UNICEF, Water Aid, and other civil society groups, noting that the forum aimed to improve understanding of sector funding priorities and identify gaps that need addressing in the 2026 budget cycle.
The meeting brought together members of the WASH Caucus Secretariat, line ministries, agencies, and international partners to review sector challenges, advocate for increased investment, and foster stronger coordination.
Participants discussed the sectorโs funding gaps, with WaterAidโs recent report revealing Liberia loses approximately $231 million annually due to inadequate water and sanitation services.
The forum also focused on how to leverage international opportunities and strengthen collaboration to ensure the sector’s growth and sustainability.
