IPNEWS: Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung has dedicated the newly completed Business and Domestic Occupational Training Center (BDOTC) Hospitality Training Center, describing the facility as a significant step toward equipping young Liberians with practical skills for employment in the country’s tourism and hospitality sector.
The dedication comes amid continued concerns over high youth unemployment and limited access to vocational training opportunities across Liberia.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Koung said the center represents more than just a new building, calling it “a symbol of hope and opportunity” for thousands of young Liberians seeking employable skills.
He reiterated the Boakai administration’s commitment to expanding technical and vocational education as part of its strategy to promote job creation, economic growth, and national development.
Despite the government’s optimism, the launch of the training center is expected to renew public debate over whether vocational education alone can adequately address Liberia’s growing unemployment crisis.
Many graduates of technical institutions continue to face limited employment opportunities due to the slow pace of private sector growth and investment.
Liberia Tourism Authority Director General Princess Eva Cooper described the project as a milestone for both the tourism industry and workforce development.
She argued that building a skilled labor force is essential to improving service delivery, attracting visitors, and increasing Liberia’s competitiveness as a tourism destination.
Youth and Sports Minister Cornelia W. Kruah said the Hospitality Training Center will help bridge the long-standing gap between education and employment by providing students with practical, market-oriented training that responds to the needs of employers in the hospitality industry.
Also addressing the gathering, Alexandre Vial, Country Director of the International Institute for Cooperation and Development (IECD), stressed that technical and vocational education remains one of the most effective tools for preparing young people to compete in the labor market.
He noted that investment in skills development is critical to strengthening Liberia’s hospitality sector.
The BDOTC Hospitality Training Center is expected to provide hands-on instruction in hospitality management, tourism services, customer care, and other related disciplines.
Authorities believe the institution will produce a new generation of skilled professionals capable of supporting the country’s expanding tourism industry.
However, analysts say the long-term success of the project will depend on sustained government funding, qualified instructors, modern equipment, and stronger partnerships with private businesses to ensure graduates secure meaningful employment after completing their training.
The dedication also highlights the government’s broader effort to promote technical and vocational education as an alternative to traditional academic programs.
However, argue that such initiatives must be accompanied by wider economic reforms capable of generating sufficient jobs for trained graduates.
As the new facility begins operations, public attention is likely to focus not only on the quality of training provided but also on whether the center delivers measurable employment outcomes.
For many Liberian youths struggling to find work, the true test of the government’s investment will be whether the training translates into sustainable careers rather than certificates without opportunities.
