IPNEWS: The Vanguard Students Unification Party (SUP) at the University of Liberia (UL) has vowed to continue escalating its protest actions—including road blockades—until the government fully renovates the institution’s dilapidated campus facilities.
Student leaders have issued a two-month ultimatum to the administration of President Joseph Boakai.
They are demanding immediate structural updates to classrooms, restrooms, and basic utilities like water and electricity.
Last week, during a guided tour, SUP leadership blasted the “shameful decay” of the premier institution, pointing out leaking roofs, unhygienic facilities, and broken infrastructure.
In an effort to force the state’s hand, SUP has threatened to march on Capitol Hill and halt the ongoing multi-million dollar renovations of the Capitol Building (where the legislature meets). They argue that prioritizing politicians’ offices over student learning environments shows a total disregard for education.
SUP’s Central Committee has declared the University of Liberia campuses a no-go zone for ruling party officials. They have warned that any official attempting to visit will face public shaming and symbolic “painting exercises”
Alongside infrastructure demands, SUP is actively calling for the resignation of UL President Dr. Layli Marpayan over alleged mismanagement and high administrative salaries while faculty and facilities suffer.
Academic activities at the University of Liberia have already faced severe setbacks and disruptions due to ongoing faculty welfare strikes and infrastructure standoffs. Despite instructions from President Boakai to accelerate campus repairs, SUP maintains that previous promises have not produced results and plans to sustain civil disobedience until real changes are made.
