—- As the National Public Health Institute of Liberia
(NPHIL) continues to defend against public health threats in the nation and the region, the NPHIL wishes
to announce that a second and broader molecular testing performed on the Ministry of Health “suspected
VHS specimens” have also revealed NEGATIVE RESULTS FOR ALL EBOLA SUBTYPES — namely,
Negative for Ebola zaire, Negative for Ebola Sudan, Negative for Ebola Bundibugyo, Negative for Ebola
Taï, and Negative for Ebola Reston. This second and broader test also revealed NEGATIVE for Marburg
and other VHFs.
On the specimens in question, these extensive molecular tests also proved NEGATIVE FOR OTHER VHFs
like Lassa fever virus and others. VHFs are members of the Arenaviruses, Bunyaviruses, Filoviruses, and
Flaviviruses. These viruses are zoonotic; that is, they originate in animal or insect hosts and can spread to
humans, causing a wide range of illnesses that can be life-threatening, and characterized by symptoms
which include fever, aches, and sometimes bleeding.
Since the Ebola epidemic of 2014, the National Reference Laboratory at that the NPHIL have regularly and
routinely conducted consistent epidemiological surveillance and diagnostic laboratory testing for Viral
Haemorrhagic fever pathogens (VHF) which include Ebola virus and Marburg virus. NPHIL also continues
to strengthen its cross-border surveillance with Sierra Leone, La Cote D’Ivoire, and Guinea.
Once again, the public is hereby informed that the NPHIL safely rules out Ebola or Marburg infection in
Liberia as of the12 th September 2025 at 23:00 Hrs GMT molecular testing results. Viral hemorrhagic fevers
(VHF) are caused by many different viruses that are found in nature in animals, and the NPHIL continues
to be vigilant, strengthening (cross-border) surveillance, utilizing Liberia’s One-Health-Platform.
The NPHIL admonishes the general public and scientific community to remain calm, do not panic, go about
your regular activities, but continue to practice all public health measures as the nation’s diseases
surveillance system continues its work to keep the country and the region safe.
Meanwhile, the Press and the general public are highly encouraged to directly contact the National Public
Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) for verification of any information as the NPHIL performs its statutory
duties as the nation’s response entity against public health threats — currently responding to concurrent
outbreaks of Mpox, Lassa and Measles. To report suspected cases, please call the Hotline #4455.
