The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has issued a strong statement calling on the government and other stakeholders to take immediate action to protect the rights of journalists in the country. According to a resolution passed by the union’s executive board, the PUL is deeply concerned about the increasing number of attacks on journalists, including physical assaults, threats, and intimidation.
The union noted that these attacks are having a chilling effect on the media, with many journalists feeling vulnerable and afraid to report on critical issues.”We are alarmed by the rising tide of violence and intimidation against journalists in Liberia,” said PUL President, Julius Kanuba.
“This is a serious threat to the freedom of the press and the ability of journalists to do their job without fear or favor.
The PUL is demanding that the government takes concrete steps to protect journalists, including providing adequate security measures, investigating and prosecuting those responsible for attacks on journalists, and providing support to victims of such attacks.
The union also calls on media owners and managers to prioritize the safety and welfare of their journalists, and to provide them with the necessary training and equipment to do their job safely.
The PUL’s call to action comes at a time when Liberia is preparing for a major election, and the role of the media in holding those in power accountable is more critical than ever.
“We need a free and independent press to ensure that the voices of all Liberians are heard,” said Dennis. “We urge all stakeholders to work with us to create a safe and enabling environment for journalists to do their job without fear or intimidation.
“The PUL’s statement has been endorsed by several international media organizations, including the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB).
The union has announced plans to hold a series of rallies and protests in the coming weeks to draw attention to the plight of journalists in Liberia and to push for greater protection and support.
