IPNEWS: The National Elections Commission (NEC) has granted authorization to the proposed People’s Action Party (PAP) to convene its first national convention, marking a major milestone in the group’s bid to become a fully registered political party in Liberia.
In an official communication dated October 27 and addressed to Mr. Ahmed K. Sirleaf, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the PAP, NEC Chairperson Davidetta Browne Lansanah confirmed that the proposed party has satisfied all preliminary requirements set forth under Liberia’s electoral regulations.
“The Commission authorizes you to take the proposed party to its first national convention no later than six months upon receipt of this communication,” the NEC stated.
According to the Commission, the decision is in line with Section 7.1 of the Regulations and Procedures Relating to the Registration of Political Parties, Alliances, Coalitions, and Independent Candidates.
The cited provision empowers the NEC to permit proposed political parties that have met initial registration requirements to hold conventions for the adoption of their constitutions, by-laws, and the election of officers, consistent with Article 79 of the 1986 Constitution.
Chairperson Browne Lansanah emphasized that the successful conduct of the PAP’s national convention will pave the way for the Commission to issue an official certificate of registration, formally recognizing the PAP as a legitimate political party eligible to participate in Liberia’s democratic process.
If completed, the People’s Action Party will join the growing list of registered political institutions preparing to contest future elections in Liberia’s evolving multiparty landscape. By: Andrew B Weah, 0770637216/088642910 andrewbweah@gmail.com
