Speaker of the Liberia’s House of Representatives, Richard Nagbe Koon, has called for an urgent meeting of parliamentary leaders from the Mano River Union (MRU) to address rising border tensions in the sub-region.
The meeting is scheduled for March 28–30, 2026, in Abidjan and will focus on reported disputes along the borders of Sierra Leone and Guinea, as well as between Liberia and Guinea.
Speaker Koon expressed concern over claims that Guinean security forces crossed into Liberian territory near the Makona River and occupied portions of land, noting that the situation has created fear among residents of long-connected border communities.
He emphasized the need to preserve peace, strengthen cooperation, and promote economic ties, while also protecting democratic stability within MRU countries.
The gathering is expected to support ongoing diplomatic efforts by Joseph Nyuma Boakai and Julius Maada Bio, who have been engaging Mamadi Doumbouya to resolve the dispute.
Speaker Koon has requested each country to send at least four representatives, as lawmakers also plan to review regional agreements and reinforce cooperation, with the House reaffirming its commitment to dialogue and peaceful solutions to maintain regional stability.
