Liberia Showcases Revised Climate Commitments and NDCxSDG Report

Senior government officials and development partners gathered at the Cape Hotel for a high-level dinner to discuss Liberia’s revised Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) and the pioneering NDCxSDG Insight Report.

Co-hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the event marked a major milestone in Liberia’s climate and development efforts.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Aliou Dia, UNDP Liberia Resident Representative, highlighted climate action as a catalyst for investment and growth.

“Climate change is not just a threat but an opportunity to modernize agriculture, expand renewable energy, and create green jobs. NDC 3.0 must become an investment blueprint to attract billions in finance and technology for a green, inclusive, and competitive Liberia.”

Mr. Dia acknowledged the support of the UNDP Climate Promise and the Government of Spain in developing the NDCxSDG Insight Report, calling it “a transformative framework that links climate action with sustainable development and accelerates the ARREST Agenda.”

Dr. Emmanuel Yakpawolo, Executive Director of the EPA, emphasized national ownership and the need for strong partnerships.

“Liberia cannot achieve its 64% emissions reduction target alone. We need predictable climate finance, deeper collaboration, and long-term technical support to build capacity and sustain progress.”

He added that the revised NDC should serve as a reaffirmation of trust and commitment to Liberia’s climate journey—one rooted in ambition and hope for future generations.

UN Resident Coordinator Christine Umutoni also addressed the gathering, urging that Liberia’s climate commitments be both ambitious and actionable, delivering equity, resilience, and hope to its people.

The revised NDC 3.0 builds on Liberia’s previous submissions under the Paris Agreement and introduces new ambitions.

The NDCxSDG Insight Report offers a framework that links climate action with national development goals. Together, they align with the ARREST Agenda (2025–2029), the National Adaptation Plan (2020–2030), and Mission 300.

The evening concluded with a call for collective political ownership and alignment as Liberia prepares for technical validation, regional consultations, and final submission of NDC 3.0 to the UNFCCC.

The official presentation is scheduled for the UN Climate Action Event in New York on September 24, 2025.
