IPNEWS: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has highlighted the importance of strengthening Liberian participation and ownership in the national economy, encouraging both public and private institutions to prioritize local businesses as a means of expanding employment opportunities and advancing sustainable development.
Speaking on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at the official opening of the Uptown Motor Garage New Showroom, the President noted that his attention was drawn to the company through interactions that showcased the growing contribution of Liberian entrepreneurs to the automobile sector.
The President observed that, for many years, major auto facilities such as Uptown Motor Garage, African Motors, and Toyota were widely viewed as foreign-dominated enterprises, prompting broader reflection on the level of Liberian ownership in key sectors of the economy.
President Boakai congratulated the young Liberian now managing the business on behalf of his family, stating that it is inspiring when younger generations build on the vision and efforts of their parents. He added that such ventures deserve national encouragement as Liberia seeks to deepen local content and expand indigenous participation in business.
He stressed that Liberia has reached a defining stage where collective responsibility is essential for progress, noting that business growth is closely linked to government-provided infrastructure, including roads, electricity, and security.
The Liberian Leader expressed that the Government will continue to work toward a business climate that allows local enterprises to grow. He cautioned against practices that disadvantage Liberian businesses, particularly delayed or unpaid obligations, and emphasized that prompt settlement of payments is vital to the survival of small and medium-sized enterprises that employ large numbers of Liberians.
Comparing the impact of large concession companies such as ArcelorMittal and Bea Mountain with that of smaller Liberian-owned businesses, President Boakai stated that while big companies provide significant jobs, the cumulative effect of many smaller Liberian enterprises often creates broader opportunities across communities.
He commended Uptown Motor Garage for expanding beyond repairs into the importation and sale of brand-new vehicles and genuine spare parts, noting his satisfaction with the institution’s professionalism and service quality.
The President also recognized the role of financial institutions that support such initiatives, describing them as essential partners in advancing innovation and national progress. He disclosed that the Government will continue identifying and acknowledging individuals and businesses making meaningful contributions to Liberia’s development.
He assured Uptown Motor Garage and similar enterprises of continued facilitation through improved infrastructure, reliable energy supply, enhanced security, and policies that protect investments and stimulate growth.
In closing, President Boakai expressed appreciation to the proprietors, partners, and members of the public for supporting the initiative. He said successful Liberian-owned businesses stand as symbols of national capability and pride, inspiring others to invest, innovate, and contribute to the collective effort to “Think, Love, and Build Liberia.”
