Will Weah Honor Invitation?
IPNEWS: Aimed at fostering dialogue on governance and national development, the Honorable House of Representatives has accepted a motion to invite former President George Weah to appear before its members.
The decision comes as part of the Legislature’s ongoing efforts to engage leaders in discussions about the country’s political landscape and pressing governance issues.
The motion, proposed by Representative Melv Cole of Bong County, received overwhelming support during a session held on Thursday which saw members emphasizing the importance of cross-examining various governance perspectives.
Representative Cole noted, “Former President Weah’s tenure, which was marked by both achievements and challenges, provides valuable lessons and insights that are essential for our nation’s progress.”
Former President Weah, who served from 2018 to 2023, has been a polarizing figure in Liberian politics.
While his administration was celebrated for efforts to improve infrastructure and promote youth engagement, it also faced criticism over economic challenges and allegations of corruption.
Ahead of the 2029 presidential elections, many believe that a discussion with the former President could shed light on the political dynamics at play.
The invitation for former President Weah to testify is set against a backdrop of growing public interest in governmental accountability and transparency.
This engagement is seen as an opportunity for members of the House to gather first-hand insights into the inner workings of the previous administration.
“We must learn from the past to inform our present and future decisions,” stated House Speaker, Richard Nagbe Koon “Engaging with former leaders allows us to critically assess previous policies and enhance our approach to governance in Liberia.”
Meanwhile, former Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, is about now holding an interactive session with members of the House of Representatives amid at fostering the path to law making amidst criticism by the public of little bee done to fast-track reforms of Liberia’s aged penal laws which many view as reasons for Liberia’s slow path to growth and development.
The scheduled visit of Former President Weah, comes on the back of a major political shift, that’s sw the coming in of Mr. Richard Koon, of the ruling Unity Party (UP) officially taken over as the Speaker of the House of Representatives from Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa
of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).
Richard Koon was elected as the legitimate Speaker on May 13, 2025, following the resignation of Fonati Koffa.
Deputy Speaker, Thomas Fallah, formerly a high-ranking member of the CDC, defected to support the Unity Party and President Joseph Boakai’s administration.
Following his decision to preside over the sessions that led to Koffa’s removal, the CDC expelled Thomas Fallah, from the party in December 2024, labeling the move a betrayal.
With Koon as Speaker and Fallah as Deputy Speaker it remains unclear whether or not will former President Weah honor the invitation.
With the pairs forging a new alignment, the ruling Unity Party has effectively consolidated control over the leadership of the 55th Legislature.
