IPNEWS: Solo Gbayor, Cyrus Dolo, and Oscar Quee—three exceptional engineers born, educated, and raised in Liberia—are at the forefront of leadership in ArcelorMittal Liberia’s (AML) mining operations. As Mining Superintendents, they are driving efficiency, overseeing daily operations, and ensuring the continued growth of one of the country’s most vital economic sectors. Their dedication and expertise are clear examples of Liberians leading the way in transforming the mining industry.

leadership and operational expertise. Since joining AML in 2016 and earning a promotion to Mine Supervisor in 2017, he has steadily advanced, demonstrating a commitment to excellence and growth. Solo has not only gained extensive industry experience but has also pursued higher education through foreign scholarship from ArcelorMittal Liberia where he earned a master’s degree in Health and Safety—an essential qualification that ensures AML’s mining operations adhere to the highest safety standards. His dedication to fostering a strong safety culture underscores his commitment to both worker well-being and sustainable mining practices.

Oscar Quee’s journey is a remarkable example of perseverance and professional growth. He joined AML in 2014, initially applying for a role as a Compactor Operator, drawing from his background as a trained heavy machinery operator. Through hard work and dedication, his career has soared, leading to his promotion as a Senior Mining Supervisor and now serving as an Acting Mining Superintendent. AML has recognized and nurtured his potential, investing in his continuous development through specialized training programs. As he thrives in his leadership role, Oscar’s story highlights how commitment, skill, and opportunity can combine to drive success—both for individuals and the broader mining industry.

Cyrus Dolo is another standout professional shaping the future of AML’s mining operations. As a Maintenance Superintendent, Cyrus plays a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of heavy mining equipment. Since joining AML in 2017 as a Maintenance Supervisor, he has steadily risen through the ranks, earning a promotion to Maintenance Superintendent in 2019. His commitment to professional development is evident as he actively pursues a Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Nimba in Liberia. Cyrus has also benefitted from extensive international training, including specialized programs in Brazil in 2018, and continues to enhance his expertise by working closely with top maintenance engineering specialists engaged by AML for high-level projects. His leadership in maintenance operations ensures that AML’s mining infrastructure remains world-class, reinforcing the company’s commitment to operational excellence.

With Liberia’s mining sector poised for further expansion, the role of skilled professionals like these three superintendents will be integral in ensuring the country continues to harness its rich mineral resources effectively and responsibly. As they continue to build their expertise and lead with innovation, they are setting a strong foundation for the future of Liberia’s mining industry and the future talent that is to come.

We often hear discussions about brain drain, but AML proudly showcases the opposite—a powerful ‘brain gain.’ Liberia is reaping the benefits of homegrown talent, with these professionals proving that investment in local expertise leads to industry excellence. Their leadership is a testament to the evolving nature of Liberia’s mining sector, where hands-on experience, continuous professional development, and a commitment to best practices set the foundation for long-term success.
