IPNEWS: The Judicial Circuit Civil Law Court in Montserrado County, under the leadership of Assigned Circuit Judge George W. Smith, has issued a second writ of contempt against the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police, Col. Gregory O.W. Coleman, and Officer Victor Gbiah. The move follows their continued failure to appear before the court despite being served with proper notices.
The court’s action is rooted in allegations that the officers’ absence constitutes a deliberate disregard for judicial authority. The contempt charge relates to their noncompliance with Section 12.21 of the Criminal Procedure Law, which underscores the obligation of public officials to respect and adhere to judicial mandates. Furthermore, the court highlighted concerns about the officials’ failure to discharge their constitutional duties and alleged violations of Section 12.70(B) concerning official oppression.
Judge Smith’s ruling reflects a firm stance against the officials’ conduct, stating that such actions not only disrupt the administration of justice but also undermine public confidence in the rule of law. The court emphasized that this behavior risks exposing the judiciary to ridicule while setting a dangerous precedent of impunity for public officials.
The court has ordered the issuance of a third citation compelling both officials to appear on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Should they fail to comply, warrants for their arrest will be issued in accordance with the law.
