IPNEWS: ECOWAS, through its Communication Directorate, has kicked off an intensive two-day capacity-building training for journalists and media professionals in Liberia aimed at combating fake news, misinformation, disinformation, and anti-democratic narratives across West Africa.
The training organized in partnership with the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Code for Africa, and the Government of Germany runs from November 24–25, 2025. Participants are being equipped with practical skills in media and information literacy, conflict-sensitive reporting, fact-checking, and strategies for promoting peace, security, and good governance in the region.
Representing the German Government, Ms. Daniella Weber, Deputy Chancellor at the German Embassy in Liberia, reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting ECOWAS in strengthening communication systems, fortifying democratic institutions, and empowering those on the frontlines of protecting public information.
Delivering remarks on behalf of ECOWAS Commission President, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, Ambassador Josephine Nkrumah, ECOWAS Resident Representative to Liberia, emphasized that the training responds to the alarming rise of misleading and harmful information in West Africa and the Sahel. She underscored that ECOWAS views the media as an essential partner in preserving peace, stability, and regional cohesion.
