Another Embarrassment for Liberia at World Stage

—– UNGA Secretariat cuts off mic while president Boakai Delivers Speech

Outrage across Monrovia early Tuesday continues following the switching off of the microphone while Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai was still speaking.

Many are lashing at the complacency of members of the President’s delegation leading to another embarrassment for Africa’s oldest Republic.

On Tuesday, September 22, President Joseph Boakai’s microphone was cut off during his speech at the UN General Assembly, after he exceeded the 15-minute time limit.

The incident has been described as an embarrassment for the Liberian leader, who was silenced in front of other world leaders.

According to a UNGA Secretariat update, President Boakai carried eight sheets of prepared remarks but only managed to read three before his time was cut.

The time limit is a standard UN procedure for heads of state.

Similar incident occurred Boakai’s inauguration in January 2024, when he had to be helped away from the podium and cut his speech short due to what was officially called heat exhaustion.

Some opposition figures have viewed the embarrassment as a national disgrace and someone must account.
