The Alternative National Congress (ANC) in Liberia has issued a strong criticism of the ruling Unity Party (UP)-led government, accusing it of prioritizing the acquisition and expansion of party headquarters while ordinary Liberians face severe economic hardship.
The ANC argues that the government is channeling valuable time, resources, and political energy into “securing political real estate” rather than addressing urgent issues like rising commodity prices, high unemployment, a failing health sector, and deteriorating infrastructure.
In a statement released by ANC National Secretary General Desmond Ujay Nimely, the party used strong language to describe the situation, stating that this reflects “self-serving politics at the expense of the ordinary people”.
The opposition party claims the Boakai-Koung administration is “increasingly out of touch” with the daily struggles of its citizens, who are “drowning in poverty”.
The ANC also accused government officials of enriching themselves through “unchecked allowances, unnecessary overseas trips, inflated contracts, and opaque financial dealings”.
The ANC is urging the government to immediately redirect its focus toward policies that address poverty, food insecurity, and the collapse of public services, emphasizing that the country needs investment in its people, not in structures designed to entrench a single ruling party.
The Unity Party has not officially responded to these specific accusations, but public reaction on social media has been divided, with some supporting the ANC’s critique and others defending the government’s efforts to address Liberia’s long-standing problems.
