IPNEWS: Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung has expressed his commitment to continuing the “mission of service and leadership” associated with the late former Senator Prince Johnson, whom he described as his mentor and “political godfather”.
Speaking at events, including Johnson’s state funeral in January 2025 and an anniversary event in November 2025, Koung made the following points regarding Johnson’s legacy:
Koung repeatedly acknowledged that Johnson groomed him politically, from his start as a representative to his current role as Vice President, and that he is “forever grateful” for the mentorship.
He credited Former Senator Johnson with uniting the people of Nimba County and playing a key role in the Unity Party’s 2023 election victory.
Koung vowed to carry on Johnson’s vision for the development of Nimba County and Liberia, which he described as a “dream that must be realized”.
Koung defended Johnson’s legacy against critics, asserting that the late senator was not afraid of the War and Economic Crimes Court but publicly supported it as a platform to clear his name.
Koung emphasized that Johnson’s “legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched” and that the government would remain grateful for his contributions. The Vice President also noted the government’s readiness to assist the Johnson family in reopening the Prince Y. Johnson University once family consensus is reached.
