IPNEWS: The House of Representatives has tasked its committees on Judiciary, Good Governance, and Ways, Means & Finance to review a draft bill to establish a Probate Court Division in Bong County. The bill was submitted by Bong County Representative James M. Kolleh and has been sent to the Committees on Judiciary, Good Governance, and Ways, Means & Finance for review.
Representative Kolleh formally introduced a draft bill titled “An Act Establishing the Probate Court Division of the Nine Judicial Circuit Court, and Providing for the Governance within Bong County, Republic of Liberia”.
The House Plenary mandated a joint committee to review the proposed legislation and report its findings and recommendations within two weeks.
In his appeal to the House, Representative Kolleh emphasized that establishing a Probate Court Division would:
- Strengthen the county’s judicial structure.
- Ensure more efficient administration of justice.
- Promote the speedy trial of cases.
- Build public confidence in the judiciary.
- Reduce unnecessary delays in resolving pending cases.
Background on probate courts in Liberia
Under Liberian law, the Monthly and Probate Courts have exclusive jurisdiction over matters such as probating wills, granting letters of administration, and directing the conduct of executors.
In July 2025, the House passed a similar bill to establish probate and labor courts in neighboring Nimba County, demonstrating a broader effort to decentralize judicial services across the country.
