Liberian President Joseph Boakai has returned to Liberia from the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) after delivering his address on September 23, 2025. The UNGA’s high-level week took place in New York from September 22–29.
On September 23, President Boakai spoke at the 80th Session of the UNGA. He called for strengthened multilateral cooperation and supported a global ban on female genital mutilation (FGM). He also emphasized the importance of accountability for past civil conflicts through the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.
Prior to his address at the UNGA, President Boakai met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on September 22. They discussed Liberia’s development agenda, transitional justice, and its upcoming term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
On September 24, President Boakai also held talks with the Crown Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, to expand cooperation between the two nations.
The President subsequently launched the first-ever Liberia National Diaspora Conference in the United States. This initiative aims to encourage Liberians living abroad to contribute to the nation’s development.
On September 28, President Boakai held a town hall meeting in Maryland with Liberians in the diaspora to discuss his administration’s vision and the ARREST agenda.
Reaction in Liberia
President Boakai’s frequent international travels and the perceived lack of tangible benefits have drawn criticism from some in Liberia. However, other Liberians have expressed support for his international engagement.
His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. is scheduled to return to the country on Tuesday, September 30, following the successful completion of his Official Visit to the United States of America.
During his time in the United States, President Boakai actively participated in the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
He engaged in a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings focused on mobilizing international support for Liberia’s development agenda. Additionally, he launched the Liberia Diaspora Conference, an initiative designed to encourage the active involvement of Liberians abroad in national development efforts.
Upon his return, President Boakai will attend an Intercessory Service in his honor at the Life Center Church, located on Benson Avenue in Lower Margibi County, along the Monrovia-Robertsfield Highway. All well-wishers and government officials are encouraged to attend.
Next door SIERRA Leone, has achieved a significant accomplishment at the global level by securing official endorsement for its $2.2 billion “Mission 300 Energy Compact” during the United Nations General Assembly in 2025. This marks the largest infrastructure investment plan in the country’s history, as confirmed by State House.
The agreement, supported by the World Bank Group (WBG), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and other important development partners, was celebrated during a special event at the 2025 Bloomberg Global Forum.
Led by President Julius Maada Bio, Mission 300 aims to greatly increase access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity in Sierra Leone, boosting national coverage from 36% to an estimated 78%.
Authorities highlight that this deal demonstrates Sierra Leone’s dedication to energy security and inclusive growth, showcasing the nation as a leader in large-scale development partnerships within West Africa.
